Why storage breaks paper systems
Storage-in-transit is where moving companies lose track. The goods leave the customer, sit in a unit for days or weeks, and come back out with a different driver. Whoever loaded them is rarely whoever delivers them. If the only record is a note on a clipboard, the questions that follow — which unit, what code, who is it stored under, what is still owed — take phone calls to answer.

Facilities and units
You keep a directory of storage facilities, your own and networked, each with its units. A unit carries its number, size, cubic feet, occupancy status and access code. Search the directory by state, city or minimum cubic feet to find room before you commit a load.
Units attach to the job
A shipment is assigned to a specific unit, and that assignment is the storage record: which unit, when it went in, whether it is still active or released. Because it lives on the job, the office can see the whole picture — goods, unit, balance, proof — on one screen.
Storage is a stage, not a side note
In storage is one of the six shipment stages, and it is gated: a driver cannot mark a shipment in storage without a unit selected and a storage photo captured. The record gets created because the work cannot proceed otherwise.
Access codes stay protected
Codes are encrypted at rest. The office sees unit-level codes where entitled; facility-level codes are never displayed in the dashboard. When a driver reveals a code at the unit, the reveal is written to the audit log before the code is decrypted — so there is always a record of who saw what.
Drivers can add storage from the road. If no unit was pre-assigned, the driver adds the facility and unit at the drop and it attaches to the shipment straight away.
Getting goods back out
When goods are pulled for delivery the driver either marks the unit emptied (returning it to vacant) or records the remaining cubic feet if part of the load stays. If a customer refuses delivery, the shipment is re-stored to a different unit and rejoins the flow at ready for delivery.
